DANIEL NIN

It’s been 11 months since joining CrossFit Fibre (Feb 2017) and I can’t seem to find the spare tyre I used to carry around. The coaches are amazing and supportive but you’ll always hear about the FibreFam who struggle sweat and almost die along side you. Looking forward to the next year ahead and smashing goals …or even quietly achieving the “little gains” that give the OMG feeling like lifting that little bit heavier or being able to do some impossible movement you thought not to try – cos it’s impossible but now can do!

JULIA TEGNEBRATT

We miss you Julia!

Hello CrossFit Fibre – eat your fibre! I have been with Fibre to my last day in Perth! Literally, I did my last WOD (workout of the day) on a Tuesday night and jumped on a plane to Melbourne on a Wednesday morning. That is how hard it has been for me to say goodbye! For me, Fibre has been more than a crossfit box. It has been horribly challenging WODs (the ones that make you meet the darkest corners of your lazy soul – if I slowly move towards the exit and leave the box in the middle of the WOD, will anyone notice?) and amazing learning opportunity as a shadow coach (so thankful for my German accent, fear me!!). It was great to see how much effort CrossFit Fibre puts into the quality of training, coaching and programming. Every member is seen and gets necessary attention. The best part is! – Fibre has succeeded in creating an amazing community where everyone is seen, encouraged and is being part of the team. And I was part of that!!! CrossFit Fibre, both its coaches and members has given me so much more than just a daily fear of a workout, it has been crazy fun. I had so much support and love from the members. I wish for more people to discover the beauty of CrossFit and have the opportunity to join the amazing Fibre family. Love xxx Julia

ANTONIA ROMEO

My name is Toni. I’m a 58yr old mother of three sons aged 34, 31 & 30 and grandmother to two beautiful girls aged 3 & 7mths. I have been blessed with good health and have never been a fan of exercise! So the question arises “Why did I start Crossfit?”

Turning 50 was probably the turning point. Menopause set in and my body shape was changing. Nothing drastic but I got a little heavier and a little “more cuddly” and it was easy to blame menopause. I began not liking what I saw, it wasn’t me, the “me” that I wanted to be! So much to my despair I joined a couple of gyms. One was an old people’s gym, I was the youngest one there, then I joined an all ladies gym but they were not for me and I eventually gave up.

Then my son Marco and our gorgeous Karolina “nudged” me into doing a fundamentals class with Bjorn. Luckily ignorance is bliss because I didn’t really know what it was all about. From the moment I stepped into Fibre I remember seeing the rules written up and I decided there and then that I liked the values being instilled in this gym. The rules simply said show respect at all times, come in early and say hi to everyone especially new faces and make them welcome. There were no rules about lift the heaviest, run the fastest, be the best they were “rules” about being a good person, the best person you can be, I liked that.

Now it is only fair to say that I’m by no means athletic, I hadn’t run or skipped since I was obliged to at school in the old days but Bjorn and the team changed that. Movements are scaled down so that I too can participate fully in each session and I never feel a burden on the rest of the group.

I remember Bjorn asking me why I wanted to join up and I said “I want to be able to run and jump and play with my grandchildren (Marco & Karolinas’ too) and not just take them to the movies.
Well now I can run 1.1km and I can do 100 single unders nonstop (still working on double unders) and I feel healthier than ever.

It may seem strange but I smile throughout the whole session because I love the camaraderie within the group and even when I’m huffing and puffing and grunting I love it! I feel strong enough and brave enough to give it a go. It doesn’t always work… but hey it just might workout next time! So I’m going to give it a go and so should you.

Thanks to all the team Bjorn, Jess and Laura and all my little helpers in my class.

Toni is a wonderful smiley character who sneaks in the box early but then quietly ducks out for her 1km run. When she first started, she would be out of breath after 200m, but now, twice a week, she warms up with a 1km run. She has since recruited some of the crew to come run with her prior to class! She works so hard and pushes her limits every time during her sessions. Totally inspiring!
What a gun you are Toni! Keep pushing and moving!

SIMON NGUYEN

8 months ago I decided that I wanted to make some positive changes in my life. At the time I hit rock bottom and was diagnosed with clinical depression.

A good friend of mine Luwwi Huynh aka MAD DOG, saw this and convinced me to join his CrossFit Gym. The first thought that ran through my mind was “I’ve bought a gym one year membership before but went for about 2 weeks and never went back, CrossFit? Are you crazy? Those people are bad ass I can’t do this”.

After a lot of convincing I rocked up to the CrossFit Fibre box one afternoon; I was a little intimidated seeing weights being thrown down and people gasping for their lives after doing an intense workout. I was ready to throw in the towel, but Luwwi said this to me on my first day “Bro you got nothing to lose, this isn’t no normal gym, this stuff is addictive, and it makes me happy” with that in mind, I stayed back for the 7pm class. It was intense but fun and everyone there was very encouraging to one another like a family. I’ve been hooked ever since and in just 7 months my results have been amazing.

I have lost a total of 35 kg since joining and was part of “Team Fiesta” which placed 10th in the most recent 3v3 Throwdown competition at Claremont showgrounds. CrossFit Fibre has taught me over the past 7 months; the importance of technique, nutrition and mental well-being is key to progress far with CrossFit, to me it more of a lifestyle then a sport.

I want to specially thank Coaches Bjorn Voon, Jessica Chu-Voon, Laura Smith and The Fibre Family!! For all the support and motivation you give me day to day, I could have not done it with out you all.

Sumo is a regular at Fibre and every time he comes in, he has a smile for everyone. He works hard and always gets into his zone. Highly coach able and never ever complains when told to repeat a bad rep. His transformation is amazing and an absolute inspiration. Well done Simon. You champion. Keep pushing and keep smiling.
